#5 Research meet-up: How analytics can improve large health systems
This research meetup looked at how data and analytics can be implemented in healthcare operations, system design and large-scale service delivery. The session draws on projects developed jointly by Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the MIT Sloan School of Management.

This research meetup looked at how data and analytics can be implemented in healthcare operations, system design and large-scale service delivery. The session drew on projects developed jointly by Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the MIT Sloan School of Management.
Where can analytics change how health systems operate?
Large health systems involve connected decisions about how services, staff and resources are organised and delivered. Analytics can support these decisions by identifying alternative operating models and testing how changes in one part of the system affect the rest.
Throughout the webinar, several projects developed through collaboration between Massachusetts General Hospital and MIT Sloan School of Management, involving colleagues at MGH alongside MIT postdoctoral researchers and students, were presented.
What does it take to move analytics into practice?
The focus is not only on developing analytical models, but on implementing them in real health systems.
The session discussed general principles and the factors that can determine whether an analytics project moves from a technical result to sustained use in practice, particularly for projects involving operations, system design and optimisation of large delivery systems.
